- Thirty-four of 39 live CNC machining vacancies ask for no formal qualification at all. Twenty-three name none whatsoever.
- Only two of nine electronics design engineer roles demand a degree. One says outright that applicants without formal qualifications will be considered, on a role involving VHDL and ISO 26262.
- Searching motorsport on the government apprenticeship service within 30 miles of Silverstone returns zero results. The same search for machining returns one, 29 miles out, and it does not mention motorsport.
- Two live motorsport apprenticeships exist across all 128 vacancies.
- Eight adverts say degree or equivalent. That phrase names no qualification a person could enrol on, sit or fund. It is an escape hatch for the employer, not a door for a candidate.
Four occupations, side by side
The spread is the whole argument. One occupation is wide open, one is sealed, and the pipeline is pointed at the sealed one.

Degree share is measured against engineer roles for the engineering disciplines and against trade roles for machining, so the comparison is deliberately not like for like. This is a scan of what is visible, not a measure of demand: seven of the 39 machining adverts carried no date at all, and three employer boards could not be read by machine.
Almost nobody tells you what it pays
8 adverts of 39 in the machining scan published a figure. It is the most honest of the four, which tells you about the other three.
Where a rate was published
GBP 14 to 24 an hour basic, rising to about GBP 29 on nights and weekends with premiums applied.
GBP 30,000 to 45,000 basic, up to about GBP 51,750 with a 15% shift allowance.
Who publishes, and who does not
Not one F1 team published a figure in any of the four scans. Every agency advert did, and every agency advert conceals the employer. That is the trade-off on offer.
